PRH established in 1983

FUNCTIONS:

To provide a botanical reference collection on the flora of the Pilbara and neighbouring biogeographical region.

To facilitate the development and maintenance of a comprehensive botanical database for flora within the Pilbara and neighbouring biogeographical region.

To provide an information resource to the Pilbara community.

GEOGRAPHIC SCOPE:

North west of Western Australia. The PRH houses vouchers from the Pilbara, Great Sandy Desert, Little Sandy Desert, Gascoyne and northern portion (Cape Range) of the Carnarvon Biogeographical Regions.

TAXONOMIC SCOPE:

Representative collection of specimens from throughout the region. Many genera have been well curated by the representative specialist taxonomists.

The Pilbara Regional Herbarium is a valuable resource for taxonomists working on floral groups that occur throughout the Australian arid zone, in particular the Pilbara Region.

Non-Taxonomic:

Botanical/biological surveys throughout the region by CALM.

Fire ecology of mulga woodlands undertaken by CALM.

Botanical surveys undertaken for specific projects by resource development companies.

Rehabilitation monitoring programmes undertaken by resource development companies.
